How to Measure a Trailer Axle:

Below are examples of straight and drop axles.

The top straight axle depicts a hub on the left side and a hub with brake drum (hub-drum) on the right side.

The lower axle depicts a drop axle without hubs or drums

The spring centers identify the position of the springs and mounting hardware and should align with the mounting positions on the trailer frame rails.

Note that the springs can be mounted above (overslung) or below (underslung) the axle. This will raise or lower the axle depending on the configuration.
